John Cratchley A quiet,personal,distilled and intense enquiry into Coltrane's music all played acoustically by Noel on top form...his approach (judging by the speed with which he puts out releases) is to work fast and impressionistically but with a quite magnificent technique...
For me,this makes these readings of Coltrane's work feel enigmatic but then he concentrates on the compositional skills rather than the massive chops through which Coltrane is usually filtered. I think his take on 'Equinox',for instance,is amazingly erudite.
Noel has stated that he has finished with the medieval music oeuvre now,but I think he's applied the same working practices to Coltrane with outstanding results...it will make you go back to the originals with fresh insight,I think.
I'd love to hear him approach the music of,say,Lennie Tristano in the same way!!
