John Cratchley
This is the third recording of Paul Motian's music by other musicians in my BC collection...all are wonderful and all are completely different in their approach to his music...proving,I suspect,the sheer breadth and scope of his compositional abilities to be interpreted in so many different ways...
Motian's music was to my mind sparse and simple (both extremely difficult values to bring to composition, so I do not use these words in any sense other than complimentary).
His drumming style was "time/no time",to my mind;open,full of space with implied rhythm...Noel deconstructs his music with this in mind,I think,very beautifully and with compassionate understanding...fitting really for such great music.
